Strategic partnership advances urban EV adoption, curbside accessibility, and sustainable municipal revenue.
JOLT Charge USA, Inc (JOLT), a global electric vehicle (EV) charging and digital out-of-home network, has been selected by the City of Hoboken as the new operator of 14 on-street public charging stations. This partnership supports reliable curbside infrastructure for residents at no cost to taxpayers, advancing the transition to equitable urban mobility.
The transition follows a competitive procurement process and approval by the Hoboken City Council to ensure long-term operation and maintenance of the City’s on-street charging assets.
Previously operated by Volta Media Network and now integrated into JOLT’s expanding U.S. network, these 14 EV charging stations, which include a mix of level 2 and DCFC speeds, have facilitated more than 10,000 charging sessions and delivered over 700,000 EV miles since October 2023.
While traditional curbside charging often requires significant municipal capital, complex grid upgrades, and long timelines, JOLT’s advertising-supported infrastructure model allows stations to be operated and maintained with zero financial impact on the City. This approach generates a sustainable revenue stream for the municipality through monthly rental fees. The agreement also gives the City of Hoboken the ability to use the station’s ad panels for public service announcements.
“Sustainability in Hoboken means making clean transportation practical and accessible for everyone, especially in a city where many residents utilize on-street parking,” said Mayor Emily B. Jabbour. “Expanding curbside EV charging with JOLT Charge strengthens our climate action efforts by bringing reliable charging directly into our neighborhoods. By prioritizing on-street access that’s convenient to our residents, we are advancing a more equitable and lower-carbon future for Hoboken.”
“We’re proud to partner with the City of Hoboken to strengthen its on-street EV charging program,” said William Watts, General Manager US Network & Operations at JOLT Charge. “Our goal is to ensure charging stations remain reliable, accessible, and easy to use for residents and visitors, while also delivering increased value back to the City. JOLT is proud to support Hoboken’s commitment to sustainable transportation and to help communities adapt as electric vehicle adoption continues to grow.”
In dense cities where most residents lack access to private garages or off-street parking, curbside charging is not just a convenience; it is essential infrastructure to ensure equitable access to electrification. JOLT’s model keeps charging affordable for drivers while funding 100% of operational and maintenance costs through its premium digital advertising network, creating a scalable solution tailored to urban communities.
Drivers can locate charging stations and view real-time availability and wait-time estimates through the JOLT app. More information is available at joltcharge.com/us.
